Why March and April Beat Both Neighbours
Cyprus sits between two price seasons. From mid-June to September, coastal hotels in Ayia Napa and Protaras charge their peak summer rates. From November to February, many of the same properties close or run on a skeleton service, and Larnaca and Paphos fill with winter-long stayers. March and April land in the gap: daytime temperatures typically sit in the high teens to low twenties, the sea is still cold for most swimmers, and hoteliers are filling rooms rather than maximising them. That is the window where you get four-star comfort at prices closer to winter self-catering than to July.
The weather is the honest trade-off. March can bring rain showers and cool evenings, especially in the Troodos foothills, where snow sometimes lingers on the peaks into early April. April is the better bet for beach days, with Larnaca's Finikoudes promenade and Paphos's Sodap Beach comfortable for sunbathing well before the water warms. If you want guaranteed swimming, book for late May instead. If you want long walks, empty archaeological sites and lower room rates, aim at the last two weeks of March or the first three of April.
Larnaca and Paphos: The Value Core
Larnaca is the practical pick for a short spring break. The airport is ten to fifteen minutes from the Finikoudes seafront by taxi, so you lose no time to transfers, and the strip of hotels behind the palm-lined promenade offers the widest choice of mid-range rooms on the island. The Mackenzie area, a twenty-minute walk south past the salt lake, has newer boutique-style properties. In March and April, seafront rooms here are typically the best value of any coastal town, and you can walk to the Church of Saint Lazarus and the Kamares aqueduct without a car.
Paphos splits into two bases. Kato Paphos, around the harbour and the UNESCO-listed mosaics, suits travellers who want restaurants and ruins on foot; the seafront hotels along Poseidonos Avenue are the obvious choice. Ktima, the inland old town, is cheaper and more local but a fifteen-minute drive from the coast. April is the stronger month here, as the coastal path to the Tombs of the Kings is exposed and unpleasant in rain. If you are booking one base for a week, I would take Kato Paphos in April and Larnaca in March.
Nicosia, Limassol and the Hills
Nicosia is the option most visitors skip, and in spring that is a mistake. The divided capital has the island's best food and its most interesting streets, particularly around Ledra Street and the old town inside the Venetian walls. City hotels in March and April are markedly cheaper than coastal resorts, and you are ninety minutes or less from both Larnaca airport and the Troodos villages. Use it as a two-night city break at the start or end of a trip rather than a beach base. Limassol, meanwhile, is the priciest coastal city in spring, driven by business travel and its marina development, so book it only if you want the city's restaurant scene.
What to Skip and When to Book
Skip Ayia Napa and Protaras in March. Much of the resort strip is shuttered until around Orthodox Easter, restaurants open sporadically, and the beaches are windswept. They are excellent in June, not now. Also skip the Troodos peak villages before mid-April unless you are prepared for cold, wet weather and closed guesthouses. Pissouri and Polis Chrysochous are gentler alternatives if you want a village base with access to the coast, and both have small hotels that open by March.
Book direct or through a booking site in early February for March arrivals and early March for April. Spring demand is rising but not tight, so you can often wait for a better rate; the exception is Orthodox Easter week itself, when Cypriot families travel and coastal hotels in Larnaca and Paphos fill quickly. Check whether your hotel's pool is heated, because many unheated pools stay bracingly cold until May. Ask about parking if you plan to hire a car, as old-town properties in Nicosia and Ktima rarely have any.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Is the sea warm enough to swim in March or April?
Rarely in March, and only comfortably by late April. Sea temperatures lag the air by several weeks, so most visitors swim from mid-May. Pools are often unheated until May, so check before booking if swimming matters to you.
Which Cypriot city is cheapest for a spring hotel?
Larnaca generally offers the best value on the coast in March, with Nicosia cheaper still for city stays. Paphos is competitive in April. Limassol tends to be the most expensive coastal city in spring because of business demand.
Do I need a car for a March or April trip?
Not for a Larnaca or Kato Paphos stay, where the seafront, restaurants and main sites are walkable. A car helps for Troodos villages, Polis and Nicosia day trips. Hire rates are lower before Easter, and parking in old towns is limited.
