Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement, often written Khirokitia, is the best-preserved Aceramic Neolithic village in the eastern Mediterranean and has stood on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998. People lived on this hillside above the Maroni river from roughly 7000 to 5200 BC, in circular single-room houses of stone footings and mud brick gathered inside a substantial enclosure wall, one of the earliest defensive or boundary structures known on the island. Porphyrios Dikaios excavated here between 1936 and 1946, and a French archaeological mission has worked the site since 1977. The excavated slope of low stone circles can look like a field of foundations, which is why the five reconstructed dwellings near the entrance matter: you duck inside a Neolithic room and grasp its scale at once. Finds include burials under house floors, infants interred with stone bowls, milling equipment, sheep and goat bones, and no pottery at all. From the reconstructions a path climbs past the house circles, the line of the enclosure wall and viewpoints over the river valley towards Kalavasos.
