Pissouri

Hillside village and its cliff-backed bay midway between Limassol and Paphos, with the island's best sunset swim

Pissouri is two separate places sharing one name. The village sits at 200 m on a ridge off the B6, a grid of stone houses around a square with a church, two kafeneia and a handful of tavernas. The bay lies three kilometres and a steep, winding descent below it, a crescent of dark sand and shingle backed by white chalk cliffs, with a small strip of hotels, sunbed concessions and beach restaurants. Neither is walkable from the other in any sensible way — the road down is 12% in places with no pavement — so decide early which one you are booking.

The bay is where the five-stars are, and where you get the sunset. Cape Aspro rises to the west, so the sun drops into the sea beyond a wall of chalk cliff and the whole beach turns orange for twenty minutes. A sunbed pair with umbrella costs about €10 to €12 for the day, a beach-restaurant lunch of grilled halloumi, salad and a beer around €18, and a proper dinner on a terrace above the sand €28 to €38 a head. At nine at night it is candles, low music and couples; the loudest thing on the beach is the surf against the shingle.

The village, by contrast, still has residents, a lot of British and northern European long-stayers, and prices about a third lower. Dinner in the square is €18 to €24 with wine, and the local wine cooperative tradition survives in the vineyards that ring the ridge — this is the eastern edge of the Krassochoria wine country that runs up towards Omodos. The square is properly dark and quiet by 11pm, which some people find blissful and others find a reason to be somewhere else.

Book Pissouri if you have a car, want a good beach without a resort strip attached, and like being 30 km from Limassol and 40 km from Paphos so you can day-trip both. Skip it if you have no car — the intercity bus drops you on the highway junction and the walk down is a punishment — or if you want shopping, museums or nightlife within stumbling distance. Cliff erosion has closed sections of the shoreline path over the years, so check what is actually open before you plan a long coastal walk.

Where to stay in Pissouri

Two bands, two very different holidays. On the bay, the hotels sitting directly behind the sand command €150 to €260 in shoulder season and comfortably €350-plus for a sea-facing suite in August; that price buys you a two-minute walk to the water and a sunset from your balcony. Up in the village, stone-built guest houses and villas around the square and on the lanes running east towards the vineyards go for €70 to €120, with better food value and a car park outside the door. The road linking the two is the thing to think about: it is steep, unlit in stretches and not a walk you will do twice after wine. Avoid rooms on the first bend of the descent road, which get engine braking all day, and avoid the westernmost bay properties if cliff-stability works are underway.

Village to bay descent (4 km)

Start at the church in the village square, walk south past the last stone houses and pick up the old road running down the ravine. You lose 200 m of height in about two and a half kilometres, with vineyard terraces on the left and chalk cliff opening ahead. The road delivers you at the top of Pissouri Bay; cross to the beach, walk the crescent west to the foot of Cape Aspro, and swim. Get a taxi back up.

Getting there & around

Pissouri sits off the B6 midway between Limassol and Paphos, 30 km and 40 km respectively, and both airports are about 50 minutes by car — Paphos slightly closer, Larnaca around 1 hour 20. Taxis run €55 to €70 from Paphos Airport. The Limassol-Paphos intercity bus does stop at the Pissouri junction on the main road, but that leaves you three kilometres and 200 m of climb from the village and further from the bay, so treat it as an emergency option. Within Pissouri there is a small local shuttle between village and bay in high summer only; otherwise it is your car or a taxi at roughly €8 to €10 each way.
